Partner, Civil law notary

Jolande van Loon

Specialisation

The focus of Jolande's practice is corporate and real estate law but she also has experience in estate planning. Her great team consists of 22 people with different areas of expertise. Half of her team deals with corporate law (governance, reorganizations but sometimes also a cross-border merger) and the other half specializes in the niche practice of energy-related real estate, such as wind farms, solar, and the establishment of building rights for cables and pipelines, substations and heat-cold storage.
Jolande is a member of the notarial specialist associations EPN (estate planners) and the IBA (International Bar Association).

From 2005 to 2017, Jolande served as a disciplinary judge in the Notarial Practice Chamber (disciplinary supervision of notaries) for the districts of Rotterdam, Dordrecht and The Hague.
From 2017 to September 2023, Jolande was a member of the Board of the Rotterdam Department of the Royal Notarial Association (KNB), the last three years of which she served as President (similar to the Dean of the Bar Association) for this District, and thus was also a delegate to the KNB's Council of Members and representative of the notarial profession in the Rotterdam-Rijnmond Crime Control Platform. From the Council of Members, she served on various committees.

Background

Jolande completed her studies in civil law at Erasmus University Rotterdam in 1990, after which she immediately started at a small notary office in her hometown of Gouda where she practiced family law. There she completed an evening course in notarial law at the VU in Amsterdam within a year. In 1992, she transferred as a candidate notary to Nauta Dutilh in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. There she successfully completed professional training and the Grotius Academy Corporate Law. In 1996, Jolande joined Loeff Claeys Verbeke in Rotterdam to work in a team consisting of lawyers and notaries and was seconded to New York for a few months in 1998/1999.

When the Loeff firm split in 1999 and Jolande preferred to continue working in Rotterdam rather than move with the rest of her team to Allen & Overy in Amsterdam, a number of former Nauta colleagues asked her to start a notarial practice within their recently established law firm, then consisting of 30 people. In the summer of 1999, she wrote her business plan and so, in 2000, Jolande was appointed a notary with Ploum Lodder Princen in Rotterdam, making her the first notary to start a notarial practice within an existing law firm under the new Notary Act.

Within the Ploum firm, Jolande has held various positions including board member of the partnership. The Ploum office now employs around 180 people, 35 of whom work in the notarial practice. The firm provides services in the fields of law, notarial practice and as trademark agents.
