Attorney at law, Partner

Jeroen Zandt

Specialisation

Jeroen is an experienced litigator specializing in everything that’s got to do with international trade and transport, including the insurance issues that come with it. He often conducts legal proceedings in court or in arbitration, inside and outside of The Netherlands. Among his clients are insurers, trading companies, production companies, logistic service providers, retailers and investors.

Background

Jeroen combines a strong scientific background with language skills. He was trained in the classical languages at the Gymnasium Haganum in The Hague, following which he graduated in both Chemistry (Quantum Chemistry) and Law (Business Law) at Leiden University. In 2011 he completed the post-graduate specialization course “Grotius” in the field of Transport Law.

During his student years, he worked as a private tutor in Maths, Physics and Chemistry, after which he has been working as a lawyer since 1998 with respectively Allen & Overy (previously Loeff Claeys Verbeke), DLA Piper (previously SchutGrosheide) and Codex Mulder Advocaten.

Legal matters business counts

As a lawyer, one must always realize that legal considerations are often just a piece of the whole puzzle. A good lawyer does not immediately dive into legal solutions, but first investigates in further depth the underlying facts, interests and circumstances. On the other hand, I think you have to keep your own lane: a lawyer offers legal knowledge, but always needs to be aware that this legal expertise is only one of the possible tools to handle a certain issue.

Representative matters

  • Jeroen successfully assisted a major fruit importer and its insurers in various complex arbitrations about significant cargo damages to multiple shipments of bananas. Jeroen succeeded in meeting the heavy burden of proof, thus establishing liability of the carrier.
  • Also thanks to his mathematical insight, Jeroen succeeded in disclosing a major insurance fraud, as a result of which a malicious multi million euro insurance claim against Hull & Machinery Insurers was denied by the court.
  • Jeroen successfully assisted a commodity trader that had been deprived of payment for delivered shipments due to Cyber Crime. Jeroen defended his client against false accusations and ensured that full payment was made after all. Afterwards, Jeroen advised on changing the payment system by using documentary credit to avoid similar complications in the future.
