Ploum advises Social Investment Managers and Advisors, LLC in setting up an investment fund that invests in renewable energy distributors

05 Aug '20

Ploum has assisted Social Investment Managers and Advisors, LLC (SIMA) in structuring and setting up the SIMA Angaza Distributor Finance Fund, an impact fund that issues notes to investors and subsequently on lends these funds to enterprises in emerging markets. It is a project that contributes to the creation of profitable companies in emerging markets that have a financial, social and environmental impact. Some of the fund’s first investors are Shell Foundation, Skoll Foundation, and Ceniarth. SIMA is a US impact fund manager and adviser that already manages a US $90 million fund, the SIMA Off-Grid Solar and Financial Access Senior Debt Fund I for sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Setting up the fund required a combination of expertise that Ploum could offer as a multi-service office. A multidisciplinary team has drawn up and advised various agreements in close cooperation on legal aspects relating to matters such as property law, contract law, data privacy and financial supervision law. Ploum's team consisted largely of a new generation of partners and associates, which has proved to be a good and successful result of the strategy of growth, specialization, innovation and rejuvenation that had already been initiated at Ploum.

“We were only able to do this because, in addition to our full-service offering, we have a combination of niche expertise in-house. We are proud that we were able to make a successful contribution to this special project, which has a financial, social and environmental impact. ” - Lucas Lustermans, partner at Ploum

“This is the first time that SIMA and Ploum have worked together. This project with Ploum's expert and practical approach has laid a solid foundation for further enjoyable collaboration. ” - Matthijs Laban, senior legal counsel at SIMA

The team at Ploum was led by Lucas Lustermans (Banking & Finance) and further comprised of Matthijs Bolkenstein (Banking & Finance), Stan Commissaris (notarial corporate law), Tessa 't Hart (notarial corporate law), Nina Witt (data privacy) and Anamika Wilbrink (data privacy). More information about SIMA can be found here. More information about the Banking & Finance team at  Ploum can be found here.
